Top things to do
In Funchal visit the botanical gardens, Funchal market, the Topical Palace gardens; travel up by cable car and back on the famous Toboggan! Try Old Blandy’s Wine lodge for lovely wines and some impressive vintages. Go whale and dolphin watching. Trips leave twice a day and they bring you to Cabo Girao, the highest cliff in Europe where you can snorkel and swim around. For walks and hikes, Paul da Serra plateau is the highest point on the western side of the island and you can start the Levada walks here. A great way to experience Madeira’s beauty up close is in the Laurissilva forests. Also try your hand at sailing, fishing, surfing and diving the Garajau coast, an underwater reserve.
Road Trips
Outside of Funchal, there is a lot of exploring to do. You can get into your rental car and drive all over island, venturing north to experience spectacular valleys and cliffs or head south on the coastal road for a prettier setting where the roads are lined with flowers. Either way, you will find lovely little fishing villages where you can enjoy the fresh catch of the day, or happen upon sheltered little coves and rocky beaches. Because it is a volcanic island, a lot of beaches have black volcanic sand, but don’t let that put you off; the water is crystal clear and not so cold. To experience golden sand, you will need to venture to Calheta and Machico where they have brought the sand in especially.
