Cape Town International Airport
located 22kms from the city centre, serving Cape Town city and South Africa’s Western Cape, opened in 1954, replacing the existing Wingfield Aerodrome. The airport had domestic flights and only two international flights when it opened first. One flight was direct to England and the second flight was also a UK flight but via Tambo International airport in Johannesburg, the airport was called Jan Smuts Airport back then. Cape Town Airport has grown considerably since its two international flights and is now the third busiest airport in all of Africa. It is also well recognized as one of the best airports in Africa, holding more awards than any other and being winner of the Best Airport in Africa Award for 2011/2012 as presented by the Airports Council International.
