Getting there & Away

Rome Fiumicino is a really busy airport, so it is always advised to know how you are going to get from the airport to your destination, and where possible, book in advance. The train is probably the most common mode of transport to get into the city. There are two lines, the Leonardo Express (€14) which goes directly to Termini Railway Station, which is Rome’s main transport hub and takes about 30 minutes. The other route is the Sabina- Fiumicino line which goes to Tiburintina, Tuscolana, Ostiense and Trastevere, and departs every 15-30 minutes (€8). For buses into the city go to Terminal 3, bus time is 40-60 minutes depending on traffic. Buses for regional locations depart in terminal 2. Taxis can be got outside each terminal. Use only the yellow or white taxis and ensure your meter is running or else agree a fare. Tourists regularly experience overcharging of being taken on the scenic route to your destination.

For some down time, sit in any number of beautiful piazzas, eat gelato or sorbets, drink coffee, eat pizza, people watch and enjoy the city. For a day trip outside the city, the Catacombs are really interesting. Or jump into your hire car and drive into Umbria to see Orvieto or Assisi, or head to Frascati, the wine town; or checkout Tivoli and the Villa d’Este or a day at the beach in Ostia Lido or further afield
