Rome should be on everyone bucket list, it is a city to be experienced and to be loved. Italy and Greece are acknowledged as the home of western culture. This sense of history and timelessness is more than evident today when you walk through the streets of Rome. Rome is almost casual about its abundance of beautiful masterpieces in art, sculpture and architecture. The biggest challenge you will face in Rome is choosing what to see. I found that by picking my ‘must sees’ and focusing on them for a few days and then allowing myself a day or two just strolling around and stumbling upon the magic of the city satisfied my initial curiosity for the city but you will always want more!

Top things to do

Must sees; the Coliseum (by day and by night), the Roman Forum for a sense of history, power and grandeur of the Roman Empire. A tour is a good idea but you can also go with a good guide book. Don’t miss the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain (toss coins over your shoulder into the fountain to ensure a return visit). In Vatican City get to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums where you will see amazing art, sculptures and tapestry. The Vatican Gardens are really beautiful and can be seen by tour only (book 1 Day before.) The catacombs just outside the city are also really interesting for a visit. And otherwise just stroll and explore.

Road Trips

There are great day trips from Rome and also longer roadtrips to Florence, Umbria, Pompeii and Sorrento which you can do in a day but at least one overnight would be better. Tivoli (30km) is home to the incredible villa with amazing gardens boasting almost four hundred fountains. Also check out the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa and the quarries of Travertine marble which was used for the important buildings in Rome. Spend a day in Rome´s wine country, Castlegandolfo, Nemi and Frascati, enjoy a great lunch and even organize a wine tour. Another day could be spent visiting the ruins of Ostia, the excavations of Rome’s ancient port-city and the Castle of Pope Julius II.
