Alicante Elche Airport,
previously known as El Altet, has been serving tourist visiting the Spanish Mediterranean since 1967. The area known as the Costa Blanca attract passengers mainly from the UK, German and the Netherlands who are arriving to soak up the sun in Alicante and in the nearby Murcia region which is easily access along the A7 motorway by rental car. Traffic to the airport has grown considerably over the last 15 years, now being serviced by Ryanair and by charter tour operators. In 2011, the airport opened a new Terminal and now handles 9 million passengers per year. Part of this growth has come from internal flights from Madrid, Barcelona and Mallorca.
