There are two airport servicing Venice city; Venice Marco Polo airport and Venice Treviso airport. Treviso airport is 20km from Venice in Treviso province and is used by tourists travelling on low cost airlines to Venice. The main airport is Marco Polo; it is located about 8kms from Venice. The main terminal has three floors with arrival on the ground floor and departures on the first floor. This terminal opened in 2002 and is already at full capacity with over 8 million passengers in 2012, mainly from North America and the Middle East. Because the airport is stretched to capacity, we always recommend having your onward travel organised before you get there to save time and stress.

Airport Car Rental
While Venice itself is a city of canals, car rental is still a very popular choice of transportation from Marco Polo airport. Many people spend just a day or so in Venice and then travel around the north of Italy or into Croatia. Getting there & Away
If you are not renting a car from Marco Polo Airport, then there are a few other ways to get to Venice. The best public transport option is to get a bus to Venice; there are two bus types; firstly the Actv public bus which has no space for luggage, or the Express Coach or ATVO bus, which you will need to take if you have luggage. It takes about 20 minutes to get into Venice and the main routes are to Venice – Piazzale Roma (line 5) or Mestre (line 15). If your destination is not Venice itself, then once you are in Venice you can walk to the train station and get a train to all major Italian cities. Beware of the booking options for the trains, they can include different sleeping options.
Things to do
In Venice, you will want to wander and even get a little lost, take a water taxi or a gondola if your budget permits, visit Piazza San Marco and check out the Basilica San Marco and Doge Palace and Grand Canal. If you want to see more than just Venice, then be prepared to make choices as there are so many places within easy reach of Venice. Head to Jesolo which is only 45 minutes in a rental car and enjoy a few fabulous days at the beach. Drive to Verona and Lake Garda (1 – 1 ½ hours), or head further into Italy to Bologna which is only 1 ½ hours away, or Milan or Florence which are only 2 ½ hours away. Or drive to Zagreb in Croatia in only 3 ½ hours from Venice. So many choices!
